Three Weight Loss Secrets to Remember

Everyone knows that to lose weight we must take in less calories than we burn through physical activity. And, developing healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle without falling prey to the countless gimmicks and yo-yo dieting traps are ways of ensuring your weight loss efforts will be a success.

Here are three weight loss secrets to remember when attempting to become healthier:

1. Change Your Mindset

Beyond the "think yourself thin" mantra, there is definitely some truth to changing the way you think about food, eating, exercise and dieting in general. Adopting the "eat to live" way of thinking as opposed to the "live to eat" way of living that's so common today is one of the first steps toward changing your life for the better, and not merely in terms of the initial diet you follow to lose weight, but for the long term.

Instead of viewing food as a reward, retrain yourself to see it as a means of sustenance. Of course there are plenty of foods that taste simply delicious and are hard to resist, and do keep in mind there's no reason to completely avoid these sinful creations for the rest of your life, which will inevitably lead to feelings of deprivation and defeat, but rather learn the keys to moderation.

Start thinking of yourself as a person with a clear goal in mind, to lose weight and become healthier for the rest of your life.

2. Monitor Fat Intake

All too often too much focus is put on calories while fats are left by the wayside and allowed to silently thwart our weight loss efforts. Much like calories, not all fats are created equal, so learning which ones are healthy for the body and which ones are harmful is definitely one of several weight loss secrets to remember.

Make it a point to avoid fats coming from animal products, such as the skin on chicken, and if you do a lot of meat, only select lean cuts choosing turkey and chicken as much as possible.

3. Increase Muscle Mass

It's been scientifically proven that the more muscle a body has the more it burns fat, even while being idle and not exercising. The more pounds of body weight coming from muscle the better as you will be burning more calories while sitting still. Building lean muscle mass doesn't mean you have to look like a bodybuilder, but rather have enough muscle tone that your body will continually be burning calories while functioning like a well oiled machine.

If you've been sedentary up until now or have health issues, starting out by walking is a great way to ease yourself into a life of physical activity. When building muscle in the arms and legs, use light weights with frequent repetitions instead of heavier weights as you don't want to add bulk but rather lean muscle tissue. Weights that strap around the arms and ankles are perfect to use while walking, doing household chores, or simply going about your everyday activities to add extra weight.

As is the case with starting any new diet program or regimen, checking with your own doctor first is a good idea just to make sure there are no restrictions or things to avoid while on your path to better health.
